Fishy Smell After Intercourse
Posted byBV under Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment
Let me be straight up with you. If you are developing a fishy odor after intercourse then you have a condition called bacterial vaginosis. You may not even be aware that you have it. Some women, when they have bacterial vaginosis have to deal with the odor all the time, and not just after sex.
To put it in simple terms, the bad bacteria that are causing the condition, thrive in the environment created by intercourse. Semen is more alkaline than acidic and these particular bad bacteria prefer the alkaline environment. A more acidic environment can kill them.
Here is a more scientific explanation. The odor, which is often described as fishy is caused by amines released by anaerobic flora (the bad bacteria). Release of the amine odor is accentuated or increased with alkaline pH, which would occur in the presence of semen.
Men do not carry or cause BV but they can contribute to making it worse.
